Main applications
Methane is an important fuel, the main component of natural gas, accounting for about 87%. In the room temperature environment of standard pressure, methane is colorless and odorless; The special smell of household natural gas is an artificial smell added for safety, usually using methyl mercaptan or Z mercaptan. In an atmospheric pressure environment, the boiling point of methane is -161 °C. As long as the gas content in the air exceeds 5% ~ 15%, it is very flammable. Liquefied methane will not burn, except in a high-pressure environment (usually 4~5 atmosphere). Chinese national standards stipulate that methane cylinders are brown with white characters.
Carbon black can be obtained by high-temperature decomposition of methane, which is used as an additive for pigments, inks, paints and rubber; Both chloroform and CCI4 are important solvents. Methane is widely distributed in nature, and it is one of the main components of natural gas and biogas pit gas.
It can be used as fuel and raw materials for the manufacture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon black, acetylene, hydrocyanic acid and formaldehyde. Methane is used as a standard fuel for water heaters and gas furnace calorific value tests. Production of standard gas for combustible gas alarms, correction gas. It can also be used as a carbon source for vapor phase chemical deposition of solar cells and amorphous silicon films. and methane as a raw material for the production of pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis.
In addition to fuel, a large number of ammonia, urea and carbon black, can also be used in the production of methanol, hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, formaldehyde, carbon disulfide, nitromethane, hydrocyanic acid and 1,4-butanediol. Methane chlorination can yield one, two, trichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride.
