Primary sources
Propane is a by-product of processing natural gas or refined crude oil. In the process of processing natural gas, butane, propane and a large amount of ethane must be removed from the raw gas, otherwise these volatiles will condense in the natural gas pipeline. The process of refining crude oil. Propane appears as a by-product in the production of gasoline and fuel oil by cracking petroleum. Because it is a by-product, propane production cannot be easily changed according to demand.
Main applications
Propane is used in organic synthesis. It can be used as a raw material for the production of ethylene and propylene or a solvent in the oil refining industry; A mixture of propane, butane and a small amount of ethane can be liquefied and used as a civilian fuel, i.e. liquefied petroleum gas
Propane is more reactive than methane and ethane and can be used as a variety of chemical raw materials.
1. The largest use of propane is to make liquefied petroleum gas with butane, which is mainly used as fuel.
2. Propane is an important raw material for cracking ethylene.
3. The technology of propane catalytic dehydrogenation to propylene has been industrialized.
4. Propane fumed phase nitrification to produce mixed nitro compounds: 1- and 2-nitropropane, nitroethane and nitromethane. Nitropropane is a good solvent for vinyl and epoxy resins. Nitromethane is used as a racing fuel filler.
5. Propane can be oxidized to produce propylene oxide, by-products methanol, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetic acid, but the separation is very troublesome and has not been promoted.
6. It is widely used as a refrigerant in oil refining, chemical and natural gas processing operations.
7. Used as lubricating oil fraction to remove asphalt solvent, bitumen is difficult to dissolve in liquid propane, when extracted with propane, asphalt is removed as extraction residue, and then propane is evaporated from the fraction of the removed bitumen to leave lubricating oil.
8. Dewaxing solvent: almost insoluble in liquefied propane. When liquid propane evaporates, about 418680kJ/kg of evaporation heat can be obtained. Using these two characteristics, a part of propane is evaporated by lubricating oil propane solution, and the wax in the raw oil is precipitated at the low temperature generated, and dewaxed by self-cooling method.
9. Propane chlorination can obtain perchloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride.
10. A new method for making acrylonitrile from propane has been developed.
