Heating ammonium nitrate can generate nitrous oxide and water, and the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate in industry can produce 95% pure nitrous oxide, and one laughing gas molecule is combined with six water molecules. When a large amount of laughing gas is dissolved in the water, and then the water is cooled, there will be laughing gas crystals. When the crystals are heated, the laughing gas will escape, and people use the property of laughing gas to make high-purity laughing gas.
Main applications
1. Combustion booster: The modified vehicle using the nitrogen oxygen acceleration system sends nitrous oxide into the engine, which decomposes into nitrogen and oxygen when heated, improves the combustion rate of the engine, and increases the speed. Oxygen contributes to the combustion effect and speeds up fuel combustion
2. Rocket oxidizer: Nitrous oxide can be used as a rocket oxidizer. This is advantageous over other oxidants because it is non-toxic, stable at room temperature, easy to store and relatively safe to fly. The second benefit is that it can be easily broken down into breathing air.
3. Medicine: Due to the poor effect of general anesthesia, it is often combined with halothane, methoxyflurane, ether or intravenous general anesthetic. It is now used less. N2O is used for anesthesia without irritation to the respiratory tract and without damage to the function of important organs such as heart, lung, liver and kidney. In the body without any biotransformation or degradation, most of the original drug is still excreted with the exhalation, only a small amount of evaporation by the skin, no accumulation effect. Inhalation only needs: 30s ~ 40s to produce analgesia, strong analgesia and weak anesthesia, the recipient is awake (not anesthesia), avoiding general anesthesia complications, and recovery after surgery is fast.
